What’s the first question to ask a tree company?

Do you have an ISA Certified Arborist on staff? ISA certification through the International Society of Arboriculture requires at least three years of full-time experience, a comprehensive written exam, and ongoing continuing education. It separates people who have done the work — studied the science, passed the test, logged the hours — from people who haven’t. If a company can’t answer yes to this question, that tells you something.

What does a professional tree company do that others don’t?

They assess before they quote — a qualified arborist tells you what the tree actually needs, not an automatic removal designed to maximize the job. They explain their reasoning, so you understand why a removal or pruning is recommended. They prioritize safety for real — for their crew, your property, and anyone near the tree — with proper rigging, drop zones, and cleanup. And they show up when they say they will and leave the site clean.

What are the red flags to watch for?

Door-to-door solicitation after a storm: storm chasers offer fast, cheap work and are often uninsured, unqualified, and gone before problems surface. No proof of insurance: always ask for a certificate of liability insurance and workers’ compensation before any work begins — if they hesitate, walk away. Topping a tree as a solution: tree topping is harmful, widely condemned by arborists, and a sign of unqualified work; I would never recommend it.
